Mary and Rhoda

Bethany Joy Lenz was quite busy working working on The Guiding Light, but managed to graduate from Eastern Christian School in New Jersey in 1999. She then landed the role of “Rose Cronin” in Mary & Rhoda, a 2000 made-for-TV movie that began filming October 18, 1999.

The movie reunited Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper as “Mary Richards” and “Rhoda Morgenstern” from the 1970–1977 sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. Under the name Joie Lenz, Bethany played the part of Mary Richards-Cronin’s college-aged daughter, Rose Cronin, a student at New York University.

ABC and the film’s producers had originally considered Mary and Rhoda as a pilot for a weekly series. The movie attracted 17.8 million viewers, beating out its main competition, CBS’s “Everybody Loves Raymond”, but it was not well-received by critics and the project was abandoned.
